Lyme Disease and the Workplace
Bill Swain
Occupations that require outdoor work can place the Employee at risk of exposure to Lyme disease & the Employer at a risk of a workers compensation claim.
To reduce risk of Lyme in the workplace, OSHA recommends Employers take the following steps:
· Provide training for workers that includes information about Lyme disease and the risks of exposure and infection and the importance of the timely reporting of workplace illnesses and injuries
· Provide workers with repellents (containing 20% to 30% DEET)
· Provide workers with clothing that has been treated with permethrin to provide greater protection. Permethrin kills ticks and can be used on clothing (but not skin).
No Fly Gaiters are a great defense against ticks hiding in long grass or woods.
All No Fly Designs tick repelling products are Made in USA with fabric that has been permanently treated with permethrin. They repel ticks & biting insects up to 70 washings.
